Why Liverpool Should Be Crowned Champions Even If No More Football Is Played This Season

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

Whatever happens with the Premier League in the coming weeks and months the 2019/2020 season has to end with Liverpool being crowned champions.

As a Chelsea blog this is incredibly hard to say but it is the truth, they lead by 25 points with nine games to play.

There is no Demba Ba to ride in and save football, and if the season is stopped then it would go against the sporting integrity of the game to suggest the team all but mathematically champions do not get crowned champions.

We know the FA is desperately planning ways to end the season and tentative steps are being taken to restart football and squeeze the season in before the start of the next one is due.

Obviously the health of the nation is more important than football but if there is no more football it seems crazy not to award a team so close the title.

This is painful to write, which is why we are publishing on Demba Ba day.

Premier League To Restart Next Week – All Games To Be Live Streamed For FREE

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

The Premier League shocked the government that the Premier League will restart next week with new safety features in place and the aim of finishing the season ON TIME!

This unprecedented situation has meant the league will be relying on technology and e-Sports to get the season finished.

For safety, games will be played behind closed doors, kitchen doors that is as the government has mandated all games will be played using FIFA 20.

The maker of the game will tweak the legendary game and players will be selected and play as the video version of themselves.

The games will be kept as close to real life as possible, and there are even rumours that Jose Mourinho will be allowed to complain about refereeing decisions, the weather and Luke Shaw at half time of every game.

Initially, Electronic Arts resisted the call to make the tweaks but when rumours of PRO Evolution Soccer making a late bid to get involved they quickly moved heaven and earth to make things happen.

How The Games Will Work

  • Matches will last the regulation 90 minutes
  • Teams will play one game every two days until the end of the season
  • Results will be added to the table and stats as usual
  • Michael Owen and Stan Collymore will provide commentary on EVERY match
  • Games will be live-streamed for FREE on Twitch

Game Management

  • Teamsheets will be announced one hour before kick-off
  • Managers will be able to make tactical changes and substitutions
  • Managers will communicate with managers using the Houseparty app
  • Players in-game stats will be added to existing real-life stats

Expected Chelsea Side For The Next Game

Chelsea are expected to benefit greatly from their youth policy this season which will give them advantage over rivals with older and less tech-savvy squads.

Here is the suggested squad, the notable exception to the youth policy being N’Golo Kante because if N’Golo Kante is fit, N’Golo Kante plays.

Teams will be looking use Zoom breakout rooms to access team talks and do media appearances

Its April 1st everyone, although we found it very hard to envisage something crazier than what is going on right now.

CFC Transfer Ban Overturned – Gutted & Nervous

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

The transfer ban has been overturned and Chelsea can buy players again and I am gutted and nervous for the future rather than excited that Roman can get his cheque book out in January

The window opening feels like a huge risk to the special things that have been happening since Sarri left the club.

Transfer Ban A True Miracle

The transfer ban has been a blessing in disguise for Chelsea Football Club.

The ban put together a special set of circumstances that have created the conditions for my favourite first half of a season in over a decade.

In July the ban meant the board felt comfortable taking a risk in a young manager, empowering him to pick players from the academy. Expectations were low and manageable and the results have exceeded our wildest dreams.

The ban has seen Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori seize chances they would not likely have had without Frank and an influx of external talent.

The club is playing exciting football and whilst there are clearly some cracks, it feels like we have our Chelsea back. The fans are together, we are comfortably in the top 4 and things look rosy.

In other words we have a lot to lose

Should We Buy In January

Normally we would be elated that we were able to compete and buy players again but things have been pretty special since Lampard took over and transfers seems more like a risk than an opportunity.

If we do go into the market in January it should be for a world class defender or for no body at all. At the moment we need a John Terry type colossus of a centre forward who can organise our back line

If we learn to defend we could be an absolute beast of a team.

The Future of Tammy, Tomori and Mount

Whatever happens, it would be devastating to see transfers taken out of Lampard’s hands and see him pressured to play expensive new signings over the youth.

It would ruin what has become such an exciting team to support over the last six months. It has felt like we have all been witnessing something special together.

Abraham, Mount, Tomori and co will have their ups and downs but we are loving living every second of them with them.

January is not a time to go crazy, lets hope the board listen.

Pulisic Fan Boys Whinging Can Bore Off – BE PATIENT

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

Christian Pusilic joining Chelsea caused a lot of excitement amongst U.S fans but there’s anger he isn’t getting playing time.

He has been reduced to largely cameos as new manager and there was a notable stir when he was left out of the Champions League squad.

Currently Frank Lampard prefers the youth of Mason Mount and Callum Hudson Odoi or the experience of Willian over the American.

Lampard does not think Pusilic is ready to be a regular starter.

This has led to some quite silly and boring comments on Twitter and Facebook from instant gratification Millenials who have forgotten that it can be tough to make it in the Premier League.

Particularly when the competition for places is so fierce and your transfer fee means nothing to the new manager.

Background On Pulisic

Our last signing before the transfer ban the 21 year old was signed with a lot of fanfare before completing last season on loan to his old club Dortmund.

With the departure of Eden Hazard and a sizeable transfer fee there was an expectation that Pulisic would walk straight into the side.

This has not happened and a small section of our US supporter based is incandescent with rage.

Comments on Facebook and tweets drawing comparisons to how the club treated Kevin De Bruyne or Mo Salah. Some are even suggesting we cut our losses and sell him.

Why Pulisic Isn’t Playing and Why We Should Be Patient

Let’s all calm down, there is still a long time to go before January, let alone the summer.

When Pulisic has played he has not performed badly, he has a handful of assists but does not necessarily look like he is in a position to demand a starting role ahead of Mount, Willian and Hudson-Odoi.

I think as the season progresses he will get his chance but a high price tag and coming from a lucrative overseas marketplace for the club should not be enough to get minutes.

I am sure that given time he will be more Ivanovic or Emerson who had to wait their turn for playing time than KBD or Salah.

It may not feel like it but time is on his side!

Jorginho Transformed From Scapegoat to Leader Under Lampard

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

Jorginho was the scapegoat of the negative impotent football Chelsea were playing under Sarri. Under Lampard he is vice-captain and putting in performances that have fans singing his name.

The change in fortunes has been dramatic who shone early in his debut season before becoming the scapegoat for poor performances and inconsistent results in the second half of the season.

He was blamed not only for his own performances but also the tactical inflexibility of Sarri who moved N’Golo Kante out of his most effective defensive midfield position to accommodate Jorginho his favoured option.

The frustration of seeing N’Golo Kante trying to charge down the wing whilst we struggled defensively and created few chances drove fans to distraction.

It felt like every time Jorginho had the ball it went less than five yards or backward regardless of where we were on the pitch. When Sarri left his future looked uncertain.

Arrival Of Frank Lampard

The new manager has changed everything.

Chelsea are playing with tactical flexibility, N’Golo Kante is back where he belongs and Jorginho is at the heart of most of the good things that have been happening.

Whilst the focus has rightly been on Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori. Jorginho has been transforming his role in the side and the impact he has been having.

The Italian has been controlling the tempo of games, opening up defences with his range of passing and grabbed the moniker of the club’s preferred penalty taker.

The club has reacted by making Jorginho one of the club’s vice captains reflecting both his improved performances and experience in an extremely youthful squad.

Fan Turnaround

The fans have noticed and it has been great to see the turnaround from a constant point of frustration into one of the star players of the team.

His work ethic and performances have been appreciated with a sure-fire sign of his renaissance being fans chanting his name after the Southampton match.

Have Chelsea Just Been Unlucky With Their Slow Start?

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

Is it time to press the panic button over Frank Lampard or have Chelsea just been unfortunate? We analyse the cold, hard facts and give an early verdict.

Just one win from Lampard’s opening quartet of Premier League games with Chelsea is hardly the return that the Stamford Bridge faithful was relishing. With the title race apparently lost already, it will take a Herculean change in form and fortune if Lampard is to win the top prize as both a player and manager with the Blues.

Can he do it? Or do the numbers point to a very real decline?

While the man in the pub will rightly use the points return as a means to judging Lampard, there are diverse ways that Lampard’s lack of luck, skill or both can be quantified. The phenomenon of ‘expected goals’ (xG) is a modern metric used to judge the effectiveness of a manager, and whether or not he has merely been unlucky.

With four games of the season gone, Chelsea are almost on a par with the expected goals tally. Six goals in their favour stands at just 0.5 goals below the tally the Blues should have.

Though somewhat discouraging, that figure is more indicative of bad luck than outright incompetence. However, there seems to be a massive problem in defence, with Chelsea going into the September international break conceding 3.61 goals more than they ‘should’ have.

Defensive woes the biggest issue

Lampard was always the clear favourite to be next Chelsea manager, but with the Expected Goals metric taking into account both the quality of shots and the calibre of the opposition, the suggestion is that most of the goals being conceded under his command are entirely avoidable.

Even a return to the basics of defending could see that ‘+3.61’ figure begin to drop immediately, and only by addressing key weaknesses in defence can Lampard have any hope of turning an imminent failure into a success story. That process starts with identifying specific underachievers, and reviewing their future in the starting XI.

At the back, the biggest individual culprit so far has been Kurt Zouma. Most notably, the Dutchman conceded a penalty in the in the disastrous opener at Old Trafford, and ended August by scoring an own-goal that directly cost Chelsea two points against Sheffield United.

Zouma is a powerful figure, but one whose decision-making is open to question. Even so, his dreadful run of personal form is a mystery, with Zouma being one of Everton’s biggest assets throughout the Merseysiders’ good spring of 2018/19.

Like Lampard though, Zouma is a genuine victim of circumstances. Defensive stalwart David Luiz has joined Arsenal, Antonio Rudiger is injured, Andreas Christensen is struggling for form and Fiyako Tomori is shouldering immense pressure before his time. Succinctly put, Lampard has a perfect cocktail of defensive confusion to address.

The tendency to fold late in games is also an area of concern. This was underlined in brutal fashion by a determined Sheffield United team back on 31 August, with Zouma’s own-goal making it three matches, out of the first four, where Chelsea have conceded in the final half-hour of play. It also meant that the period beyond the hour mark has already seen Chelsea drop four points across two home matches so far this term.

Positional shortages have bought Lampard time

Though Chelsea are evidently not clinical or resolute enough for either the common fan or the erudite boffin, there are undeniably some mitigating circumstances at play. Elements such as Eden Hazard’s departure and the transfer embargo are, of course, already well-documented. So too is the somewhat poisoned legacy left by Maurizio Sarri, with a light attacking roster amidst a somewhat directionless dressing room.

The lightweight attack has essentially given Lampard an impossible task, and not even a seasoned Premier League veteran could turn Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham into Robben and Drogba overnight. Injuries have also played a huge part in the poor start to Chelsea’s season, blocking all opportunity for Lampard to pick midfield workhorses who will fight for the cause, and ease the pressure on an unsettled defence.

Still sidelined, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante fit that particular bill with the greatest zeal, and as such, Lampard should ultimately be judged once they are back in action.

Where do Chelsea go from here?

Optimistic Chelsea fans, who would remain staunch Lampard advocates until the bitter end, will point to the fact that the Blues are unbeaten under Lampard in the three games where the side have scored first. However, the return of five points from a potential nine across games in that category is nowhere near good enough, especially for a squad that still has a number of title winners from 2016/17.

Much can be said of unlucky deflections and unavoidable own-goals, but a winning team ultimately makes its own luck. That is something Chelsea have categorically failed to do, especially in away games, with the Blues going into September bereft of a Premier League away win against any established top-flight team (newly-promoted opposition excepted) this calendar year.

Albeit mostly under Sarri, Chelsea have also gone on to recover just one point from away matches in that category where they have conceded first, beating only the eventually-relegated newcomers Cardiff after shipping the first goal in a match so far this year.

A difficult away schedule awaits in the coming weeks, with a trip to the Molineux immediately following the international break. On top of the fact that Chelsea were beaten on their last visit to Molineux, the ground has gained a reputation as a graveyard for the hopes of top-six teams, with even eventual champions Manchester City failing to take full points back in 2018/19.

A home match with Liverpool awaits after that, and even a team with a rock-solid defence generally struggles to keep the Reds out.

While there are no particularly brutal schedules for Chelsea thereafter, the away calendar looks daunting as Christmas approaches.

Trips to Manchester City, Everton, Tottenham and Arsenal take Chelsea up to the new decade, and with Chelsea taking zero points and losing 15-1 on aggregate across those away fixtures last season, a huge effort – if not a miracle – will be needed to give Chelsea the confidence boost they desperately need.

Five Reasons Chelsea Fans Should Always Love David Luiz

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

It looks like David Luiz is moving across town to Arsenal for £8m. The initial thoughts may be of betrayal but ultimately it will prove to be the best move for all sides.

David Luiz is a Chelsea cult hero and should remain so barring any future badge kissing celebrations under his new colours he should still be loved.

Here are the reasons why

1 – We Forgave Petr Cech

It must be clear to Luiz due to internal conversations that under Frank Lampard he was going to get limited playing time. He jumped ship and we were able to recoup a fee for him and take him off the wage bill.

If we forgave Petr Cech for moving to Arsenal due to his achievements at the club David Luiz is worth the same consideration.

2 – He Won It All

In two spells at Chelsea David Luiz won literally everything there is to win, and with one notable exception he won them multiple times!

It is hard to fathom turning on a player who has played for the club hundreds of times and won so many trophies because they wanted to play regularly and live in the same city.

We don’t need to be excited, but I think he’s earnt it.

3 – Its Best For Everyone

With David Luiz out of the picture Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Timori get more game time. The wage bill is reduced and Frank Lampard is given the chance to mould the squad for the future.

David Luiz gets to stay in London and enjoy the last two years of his career

4 – The Numbers Add Up

David Luiz was signed from Paris St Germain for £13m less than we paid Benfica for him. Which minus the original fee means we got a player that has played nearly 250 times for the club for about a million pounds.

Not bad when you consider he scored 18 goals and won 6 trophies.

Don’t forget the hero’s performance and shootout penalty in Munich!

5 – He’s An Absolute Geezer

David Luiz the character is hugely entertaining and fans despite him being an inconsistent and frustrating footballer. Especially in a two at the back he can be an absolute liability.

He has entertained us all and won trophies doing it.

The guy is a geezer!

Chelsea Transfer Ban

Why Transfer Ban Makes This Chelsea’s Greatest Transfer Window

By Chelsea NewsNo Comments

Whilst others plan transfers as the deadline approaches all is calm at Chelsea as the transfer ban takes the angst out of pre-season and delivers Chelsea’s Greatest Transfer Window.

Instead of worrying about what will happen Blues fans have been able to enjoy summer safe in the knowledge that few surprises are likely between now and the start of the season.

It is not meant to be this way.

Rival fans have been crowing about the arbitary punishment dished out by the footballing overlords who have taken time away from planning World Cups where the heat and construction death toll rises with every passing day.

They saw it as something that would see Chelsea disappear from relevance whilst the other clubs got things done. Whilst these opposition fans laud new signings or despair at a lack of activity Chelsea know exactly where we stand.

The one player that was going to leave whatever happens has left for a sizeable fee and we squeezed a signing in January in Pusilic that will ease some of the pain felt by the departure of Hazard.

With a stockpile of talented players Chelsea still have plenty of options ahead of the current season and the mood of the fans and the bank balance will be positive come the start of the season.

Youth is getting a look from a new manager who understands the club’s DNA, if only every summer could be this awesome.

Think about it….. England have won the Cricket World Cup, a club legend has taken over as manager and our youth prospects are getting the kind of chance their predecessors could only have dreamed of.

The bank balance and profitability of the club will go up and my heart pressure is a little bit healthier.

The incoming club legend will have lower expectations to work form and might even get a fair crack of the whip. I think it is time that every Blues fan wrote to FIFA to thank them for their help.

Also absolutely no reason to watch the same story on Sky Sports News over and over again waiting for a slither of information about the club’s transfer targets.

If only every summer could be this way.
